Easing the symptoms of cystitis with basic household products & groceries
If you are suffering from cystitis or a UTI, it can be possible to find some relief from supplements and other products readily available in most households or from the supermarket.
Please always check with your doctor before embarking on a new treatment and consider the following:
- If using a product that is a known diuretic, please be aware that the acidity of the urine can increase significantly, that excessive loss of magnesium can occur and that increased acidity in the urine enables some bacteria to grow faster.
- Herbal Treatments - Herbs can be as potent as drugs - always check with your doctor before using any herbs for treatment. (Note: D-Mannose is non-herbal)
Easing Symptoms with readily available products in the home
Garlic has natural antiviral and antifungal properties - a couple of cloves raw, (best to crush and leave exposed to the air for ten minutes before eating).
Most people report that a level teaspoon of sodium bicarb in a glass of water helps them while they are waiting because it alkalises the urine which slows down the growth rate of most bacteria (please take medical advice if you have blood pressure or kidney problems).
Robinsons Lemon Barley Water
Drunk neat or very strong, (about 1/2 a pint) and repeated a couple of hours later has an alkalising effect on urine pH.
Avoiding Acidifying Foods
You may benefit from avoiding orange juice, cranberry juice, alcohol, fizzy drinks, red meat, coffee, tomatoes, or take Vitamin C tablets (unless buffered Vitamin C).
